CPD – Improving healthcare
“In addition to contributing to improvements in the care of individual patients, CPD[1] also plays an important part in improving the quality of healthcare systems[2]”.
On 14 December 2006, stakeholders representing physicians, national authorities, patients’ organisations, EU institutions, and other representatives of the health care community met in Luxembourg at the European conference “Continuing Professional Development – Improving Healthcare”. The conference was held under the auspices of the Finnish EU Presidency and the European Commission, and was organised in collaboration with several European organisations[3].
The conference was a unique opportunity to compare different experiences within the context of increased mobility of both patients and physicians in the EU. It focused on issues such as quality improvement, assessment and control, as well as funding of CPD.
The outcomes of the conference are reflected in the consensus statement “CPD – Improving healthcare quality, ensuring patient safety”, which was adopted as a corollary of the vivid discussions held during the day. Kimmo Leppo, Director General of the Ministry of Social Affairs and Health, on behalf of the EU Presidency highlighted: “in the context of health in all policies, the principles in this consensus statement are extremely important”.
“In trying to ensure the delivery of fit-for-purpose CPD to achieve good quality and patient safety outcomes, the Commission welcomes a joined up approach to CPD for all health professionals. The consensus statement that has been developed around this conference provides a good basis for further work in this area", concluded Andrzej Rys, Director of the European Commission, DG SANCO.
