Because of the growing importance of e-Health solutions, CPME welcomes the World of Health IT conference taking place on 10-13 October in Geneva. It is the first of its kind in Europe and it involves European, Middle Eastern and African stakeholders.

CPME welcomes e-health as a supporting tool for the physician in his/her work.

Also e-health can be a good tool to improve quality of and access to healthcare. However, it is very important to bear in mind that the face to face meeting and contact between doctor and patient is the cornerstone of the patient-doctor relationship. Therefore security and confidentiality are of paramount importance.

Issues such as access control, decentralised data storage, and development of appropriate legal frameworks, are main areas of attention for CPME.

CPME stresses the importance and need of intensive involvement of physicians as they are users of eHealth applications. This means they should be continuously consulted regarding the development of eHealth tools.  This is vital in order to obtain useful information on the viability of applications, and to reach acceptance and real implementation.

In order for eHealth solutions to constitute a contribution to the improvement of the delivery of health and social care, and therefore, to patient safety, a collaborative effort regarding structural, technical, financial, ethical, educational and regulatory issues is essential.
